Mohammad’s Road Back Home – Afghanistan

After more than three decades away, Mohammad has returned to Afghanistan, reunited with his family and building a stable life as a taxi driver.

Background:

Mohammad fled Afghanistan in 1986 during the Soviet invasion and spent several years in Pakistan before reaching Germany. For 32 years he lived and worked there, learning the language and holding various jobs but struggling to secure a permanent position. Hearing about the reintegration programme and opportunities back home, he decided to return to Afghanistan to reunite with his wife and children after decades apart.

Reintegration: With the support of IRARA, Mohammad chose to invest his reintegration assistance in becoming a taxi driver in Mazar city. The growing population in the region made taxi work a viable source of income. He now covers his household expenses, maintains his vehicle easily, and hopes to save enough to purchase another taxi in the future. The support he received allowed him to regain financial independence, re-establish his dignity, and live close to his family again.

At a glance:

  • Fled Afghanistan in 1986, lived in Pakistan and Germany for over 30 years.
  • Returned to Afghanistan in 2018 to reunite with his family.
  • Used reintegration support to establish himself as a taxi driver in Mazar city.
  • Now financially independent, respected in his community, and planning to grow his business.

I consider myself lucky to have met such wonderful group of people in Germany as well as in IRARA, who made it possible for me to invest my reintegration assistance wisely. Also, the fact that I am re-united with my wife means the world to me.
