Turning Return into Family Security – Bangladesh

After a decade in the UK, Kamrul returned home and used reintegration support to rebuild his life and grow his grocery business.

Background:

Kamrul set out to the UK in 2009 to pursue a diploma in hotel management and culinary arts. He joined London International College but managed only one year of his course as the college closed. His visa expired in 2013, forcing him to work without legal status in an Indian takeaway until 2019. Eventually, with no path to legalisation and wanting to support his family, Kamrul decided to return to Bangladesh.

Reintegration:

Back in Dhaka, Kamrul approached BRAC and learned about the reintegration project with IRARA. He received in-kind assistance worth 1,100 EUR, which he used to purchase rice and stock his grocery shop. This support provided him with a steady livelihood to support his wife and son and regain his financial independence.

At a glance:

  • Left Bangladesh in 2009 to study hotel management in the UK.
  • Visa expired in 2013; worked without legal status until 2019.
  • Returned to Bangladesh and received reintegration assistance through BRAC.
  • Used in-kind support to buy stock for his grocery shop, supporting his family.

The reintegration allowance provided allowed me to purchase rice for my shop and it was very well received. I am grateful to IRARA for this.
